Do the Work
26/08/2011 by Ann.
I have spent seven months of this year with my right arm literally stuck to my side due to a frozen shoulder.
This has made even the most basic of tasks difficult or impossible to do and frustration doesn’t even begin to describe how annoying it has been and the effect it has had upon my life.
But back on July 11th I finally went into hospital to have it manipulated. I was told that the procedure might not be successful, as it was so severe. When I woke up I had more movement, but probably only 20-40% of full movement. It was an improvement, but I have to admit I felt disappointed.
I started my physiotherapy on 15th July and I knew from a friend who had the same procedure that it took three months to get most of the movement back.
But on 10th August, after only four weeks, the physio signed me off! I had made great progress and had full movement vertically and to the side and it was only putting my hand up behind my back that still has a little way to go. So what caused me to make such rapid progress?
Simple: I did the work! Every exercise the physio asked me to do I did. Not just once but multiple times a day. No matter how much it hurt (and it did!) I carried on with my goal in sight. When I saw the physio I let her push me as hard as she could and again it hurt but, compared to the excruciating pain I had been in before the procedure, it was bearable.
I never stopped and never gave up. I did exactly what I was told by my physio as she is the expert, and I saw the results very quickly. In fact even she was amazed at my progress.
It is the same for your business: When you have a goal to reach make sure you get advice from the experts if it is not your area of expertise and do what they say! Don’t question what they tell you to do, just do it! There is no point in asking for help and then ignoring the advice you are given, but remember to work with people who know what they are doing so that you can emulate their success. After that you can start tweaking things.

Yes we Khan
12/06/2011 by Ann.
It’s amazing what gems you can find as you work your way through the Sunday Times!
Now, I don’t know about you, but back at school Maths was not my strong point (yes I am good at mental arithmetic and am so glad we had to learn our tables) and I don’t think I am alone. As my eldest brother was the maths genius and my other brother great at politics I stuck firmly to English. But I was, and still remain, frustrated at how hard I always found that subject and wondered if I was just rubbish or I was never engaged.
The thing is I am not alone. When I worked in the corporate world I was considered to be very numerate, which was pretty alarming I can tell you. I could never get excited about maths and wondered who could. A couple of years ago my brother was talking to me enthusiastically about how negative numbers were so much more interesting than positive numbers. I had to say that he was really animated on this subject and it rather demonstrated to me that perhaps I had missed out by never having done maths beyond 16 years of age.
So imagine my delight to read about the success of www.khanacademy.org set up by a financial analyst with loads and loads of videos to watch on all kinds of subjects. Crikey even Bill Gates’ family has been using it!
So, if you or your kids need help (and apologies that this comes right at the end of the exam period) then go and take a look and give it a go.

Super Injunctions - what you can learn
24/05/2011 by Ann.
The UK is awash with the debate on privacy laws following a number of super injunctions, preventing famous actors, footballers and businessmen from having details of their private lives (affairs) published by newspapers.
However it seems that Twitter users have spilled the beans and most of the world outside the UK has known the identity of the high profile footballer who is trying to sue Twitter and, after his name was mentioned in the house of commons he is now front page news.
It prompts the question: Can you present one image for your work and have a private life that conflicts with it?
How congruent is that?
When you are starting out in business, getting people to KTL (Know, Trust and Like) you is extremely important. If you are to promote yourself as being an honest and trustworthy person, your clients are not going to be impressed if you suddenly end up in court for deliberately avoiding paying your tax.
How would your clients/customers feel if you took out an injunction which prevented them knowing this information?
Would you wish to work with someone who was hiding information from you?
